Assessments for Children

If you are concerned that your child may have depression, it is important to speak with a Mind Works psychologist. Mind Works psychologists can assess your child’s symptoms and determine if they have depression or another mental health condition.

Psychological testing can be a helpful tool in diagnosing depression in children, as well as determining the severity of their depression and finally to develop an individualized treatment plan.

There are several different tests that can be used, and the specific tests that are used will depend on the child’s age and symptoms.

Some of the tests that may be used to assess depression in children include:

  • Interviews. The psychologist and psychometrist will talk to you and your child about their symptoms, history, and family background.
  • Questionnaires. The child may be asked to complete questionnaires about their depression symptoms.
  • Observations. The psychologist may observe the child’s behavior in different settings, such as at home or at school.
  • Cognitive testing. The psychologist may assess the child’s cognitive abilities, such as their attention and memory.

Some of the benefits of getting psychological testing for your child if you think they have depression:

  • An accurate diagnosis. Psychological testing can help to rule out other possible causes of your child’s symptoms and give you a definitive diagnosis.
  • An individualized treatment plan. Once depression is diagnosed, a psychologist can develop an individualized treatment plan that is tailored to your child’s specific needs. This may include medication, therapy, or a combination of both.
  • Education and support. The psychologist can educate you about depression and how it affects children. They can also provide you with support and guidance as you help your child through treatment.
  • Peace of mind. If you are unsure whether your child has depression, psychological testing can give you peace of mind by providing a definitive diagnosis.
