Hello, my name is Kristen. I am a licensed professional counselor that works with people of all ages. I specialize in anxiety and mood disorders, but I also have extensive experience with school and behavioral issues. I believe in a collaborative approach between therapist, child, parents, and the family as a whole. I use a person-centered approach in both play therapy and talk therapy while also using CBT and solution focused techniques to find the perfect individualized approach for your unique situation. I believe that everyone has the ability to succeed with the right support system, and with my help, soon you will too.
Finding Your Inner Strength
I believe that everyone has the strength and ability to succeed deep within themselves, even if you can’t see it because of your current situation or mindset. I want to help you find that inner ability, pull from that innate strength, and learn the techniques that will help bring out the best you have within you. We are all survivors and sometimes we just need a reminder and a hand to hold to help us through the dark times.
Whether through play therapy as a child or talk therapy as an adult, I can help you find techniques that will work for you to help you manage the daily stressors of life, make radical life changes, or to work through trauma. I can work with you to find ways to reframe your thinking and provide noticeable change and help facilitate peace in your life.
I have been working on earning my play therapy certification under the supervision of Angela Medellin, LPC-S, RPT-S. The playroom is the one place a child is free to be themselves, without the many pressures now present in their young lives. Whether your child is playing with the many toys, painting a picture, creating a sensory jar, or making their own stress ball, the play room is their safe place to work through their stressors and leave with new skills that they can apply to every aspect of their lives.
Education and Experience
I earned my BA in Psychology from St. Mary’s University and my MA in Counseling and Guidance from Texas A&M University-San Antonio. I have worked with children in some form or another since my very first job at the age of 13; first helping my mom in her own daycare during my summers off of school, then later volunteering at my family church in the nursery. I have 4 years of experience in a mental health setting, having worked as both a children’s case manager/skills trainer during my internship and a counselor in training at a day program for adults with severe mental illness.
More About Me
Much of my free time is spent with my family; whether we’re experiencing the roller coasters at Six Flags, spending quality time together on the hiking trail, or snuggled up for movie night, it’s always an adventure when we’re together. Pinterest is one of my favorite places on the internet and I can often be found pinning new crafting ideas, organization tips, or delicious gluten free recipes. One of my favorites things is baking a gluten free treat and surprising my family and friends with how delicious gluten free eating can be. I am also a true Disney nerd. Much of my daydream time is spent planning our next Disney vacation (along with matching shirts and homemade ears for all)!
