Tracy Main, M.S., LPC

Hi Y’all, I’m Tracy, a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) here at Mind Works. I am also currently working on getting my credential as a Registered Play Therapist (RTP). I like to think of myself as an emotion guide, champion of courage, purveyor of problem solving, and parent coach. I work with kids as young as 2 and up to 17 who struggle with emotional difficulties such as anxiety, depression, anger, and symptoms related to Autism Spectrum Disorder.

How I Help with Autism Spectrum Disorders

I love working with the Autism population. A number of years ago I was an in-home ABA therapist and I saw the positive outcomes this approach had, at the time I found myself trying to find more ways to make ABA fun and engaging for the kids and parents. Fast forward to a few years later I discovered there was an actual researched based therapy that did what I was trying to do! So now I am excited to be one of the only providers of AutPlay here in San Antonio; it’s a play-based approach to working with children and adolescents with autism and other neurodevelopmental disorders. Parents of children on the spectrum often face a lot of stress just trying to figure out what can they do to help their child be the best version of themselves. This treatment is designed to heavily involve parents. We will collaborate to establish goals that address emotional, communication and relationship deficits, then we work together to teach you how to teach and support your child outside of the therapy sessions. Raising a kiddo on the spectrum can be both amazing and a challenge all at once; I want to make sure you have as many tools in your tool box as you can get!

How I Help with Play Therapy Approaches

I also enjoy working with children who are struggling with big emotions like anxiety, anger, and sadness. Kids typically don’t know how to verbally express themselves the way we adults do which sometimes causes them to behave in ways that make the adults in their lives scratch their heads and sometimes want to tear their hair out! Through play I focus on building confidence, problem solving, emotional intelligence, and coping skills. Typically, I use a combination of Child Centered, Adlerian and Cognitive Behavioral approaches in my play room. During our one on one parent sessions we will focus on helping you problem solve some of these troubling behaviors and emotional difficulties you have been seeing through behavioral modification techniques, positive reinforcement, relationship building activities, and emotion coaching. My ultimate goal as your family’s counselor is to give you the info you need to not only understand your child a little better, but to provide you with tools and techniques you can take home with you and use right away.

The Older Kids

For teens my approach is to a give them a safe place to feel heard, process their emotions, collaboratively create ways to cope that work for them, and provide psychoeducation to allow them to understand their symptoms. We will also work on understanding the interaction between thoughts, emotions, and behaviors while incorporating some humor and fun along the way.

More About Me

When I’m not day trading in glitter, puppets, paint, and foam swords you can usually find this displaced Canadian at home taking care of my own tiny human, 2 dogs, cat, and husband. As a family we love venturing out to festivals, parks and the beach. When I have a moment to myself you will most likely find me reading play therapy books, treatment manuals, crafting, and pinning away on Pinterest.
